A point of perspective before you read the rest of this. I am a political agnostic, neither right or left, neither Republican or Democrat.
I was struck by an amazing dichotomy in your April 8th issue between the headline on the front page “Billionaires growing their fortunes” and the headline on the Business section “Rationing insulin. Skipping meals.” that chronicled how a single 57 year old Mom and a US citizen is living in a run down trailer and working 2 jobs, but isn’t making enough money to afford her insulin prescription and keeping enough food on her table. The point of this article was that this woman deserved a living wage; therefore the minimum wage should be raised.
We are one of the most prosperous countries in the world. When we open our southern borders and spend millions to provide free food, shelter and healthcare to anyone that crosses over, is it any wonder there’s been an enormous surge of impoverished immigrants. And historically aren’t these the very people that will work for below minimum wages to survive. Doesn’t this lessen the odds of the of that US citizen single Mom ever getting a living wage?
Maybe we ought to worry about taking care of US citizens first!
